There’s been alot of debate over the years about a 3rd Runway at Heathrow, and other means of expanding airport capacity in London. I’ve regularly contributed to the debates with observations I’ve made via Google Earth / Google Maps…. and felt now with a government enquiry on the topic on the cards, thought I’d stick them down on the ConservativeChitChat Blog so there’d be a more permanent place for these observations. It was either here, or the Transport Section on our Messageboard alongside our Real Rail Improvements series.
First off, Heathrow – looking at it via Google Maps, there’s sod all space for expansion without taking out a load of villages and things in the process + the A4.
Stansted [View in Google Maps] – Well it appears to have some room for expansion.
Gatwick [View in Google Maps] – Appears to have a bit of room for expansion, but not much.
Manston (Kent) [View in Google Maps] – One of the most favoured options by opponents to a 3rd Runway at Heathrow, due to it’s proximity with HS1 + there’s an aviation firefighting school based there too.
Boris Island / Foster’s Island (Isle of Grain) – Proposals for building a new Airport in the Thames Estuary around Sheerness + Southend-on-Sea, and my other favourite choice. The only MAIN PROBLEM voiced by critics is the proximity to the wreck of the USS Richard Montgomery with upto 3,000 tons of Explosives still on board, which could cause a large blast if they were set off. Said to be almost as quick to build as a 3rd Runway.
RAF Upper Heyford [View in Google Maps] – A year or so ago I spotted this place via Google Earth / Google Maps, last known to be in use storing surplus cars from Screaming Lord Mandelson’s car scrappage scheme. I believe this would be an ideal location for a new London Airport. It even has a railway line going past it that goes straight into London, as well as being in close proximity to the M40 Motorway. There’s been recent news of a consortium looking to build a similar idea in the same area.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with High Speed 2*, there are other things that need doing to improve the state of the UK’s Railway system, and over on the Transport section of the ConservativeChitChat Messageboard I’ve been putting down some ideas I’ve had brewing for a few years, tagged with “Real Rail Improvements” in the topic title. A handful are new, some others I’ve previously submitted via the Conservative’s Transport in the North commission they ran before the 2010 General Election…. and there may be more to come if / when I get round to it.
Included so far:
* I’m sort of in favour of HS2, but would prefer another proposal I’ve seen for an ULTRASPEED MagLev train.
The latest addition is Justine Greening, having today been reported in the Telegraph & Daily Mail to be in support of increasing tax on Petrol & Diesel at a time the bloody things (remember, fuel gets taxed twice – fuel duty + V.A.T) need cutting to encourage growth & stop ripping off tax payers by charging more in tax on petrol & diesel than the actual fuel costs. The members of the public commenting below the 2 articles don’t sound too chuffed with her either. So much for the potential she showed looking into the Car Insurance rip-off not so long ago.
The previous MP to get into my bad books being Claire Perry – the one completely oblivious to products such as Net Nanny, Cyber Patrol, the filtering built into ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite & similar products, and even Internet Browsers such as Internet Exploder & Mozilla Firefox. It’s now even built into the Windows7 Operating System, for christ’s sake. The one who wants ISPs to introduce porn filtering as default on their web access packages, similar to the bloody useless one VODAFONE place on their customers that discriminates against people who can only get a Debit Card, not a Credit Card (that’s needed to prove age to get past the sodding filter) + blocks legitimate websites as well as dodgy ones. She was also the one who told the excellent Douglas Carswell MP to f___ off to UKIP, and previously also had an outburst against “Mr Squeaker” Bercow.
Bin the post of “Energy & Climate Change Minister”.
- Minister for Environment & Conservation
- Energy Minister / Minister for Energy & Utilities (attached to the Department for Business)
So gives the impression of a headline I saw at the Daily Mail earlier…..
David Cameron has abandoned a pledge to deport thousands of foreign criminals, including burglars, violent thugs and thieves.
The Tory leader had promised in Opposition to change immigration rules so prisoners from outside the EU were automatically sent home – even those serving short jail terms.
It sure as hell wasn’t going down too good with the commenters at the bottom of the page.
I found James Delingpole’s Dog Shit Yoghurt theory *blog postings amusing, and as usual appear to be right…….. this latest headline makes it look like the Coalition is currently running an “x% extra-free” offer of more dog crap in the Yoghurt lately (if you include that home improvements / forced green projects / green levy announcement before this as well), or gone the whole hog and decided to get shot of the yoghurt part of it completely.
* Other D-S-Y blog posting
We now also have a Facebook page.
You’ll find it at http://www.facebook.com/ConservativeChitChat if you’re interested.
So was the gist of a pair of Headlines I saw the other week, and been meaning to mutter something about on this blog ever since.
Anyone else see the logic in this?
Around 26th Feb, George Osborne says “UK has Run out of Money“, and seems to be going ahead with a Fuel Tax rise at a time everyone’s screaming out for him to cut the damn things to stop harming the economy + cut government spending to fund Tax cuts.
Then a few days later, there is the headline “Foreigners to get £20,000 HIV Drugs FREE on the NHS“…. what part of “there’s no money left” don’t they get their heads round?
In Other News……………
Tax Paid to UK Government last year = £590billion
UK Government spending last year = £710billion
I had an idea recently (that I forgot to put down until just now with this blog shortly after reading something else) about placing limits on amounts spent on foreign aid….. think it was something along the lines of taking an average figure based on what the USA, Canada, Australia, France & Germany spend… then place a limit on our foreign aid levels not exceeding this average by £250-£500million.
The other day I read an article saying it now costs £100 to fill the fuel tank of an average family car.
That means filling your car now costs:
- £11 more than one of those Amazon Kindle E-Reader gadgets
- Filling your tank 4 times costs the same as an iPhone 3GS cost me to buy outright on Pay as You Go from the Vodafone Online Store last year, or also the same as an iPAD2 16GB WiFi.
- Filling it 5 times costs about the same as a near top of the range Panasonic Camcorder + decent sized SDHC card to record the pictures & video’s on.
More articles on UK fuel tax from elsewhere……
This remains a problem that drives webmasters like myself nuts, plenty (but not quite enough) is done about e-mail spammers… but the general opinion is that Law Enforcement & Web Companies don’t give a flying toss about Forum Spam.
Any passing Politicians / Politicians advisors wishing to investigate this problem might want to have a looks at the StopForumSpam Forums to learn about the extent of the problem.
